Leadership and Appointments:

  • Howard University has appointed Dr. Sonya Smith as the executive director of its Research Institute for Tactical Autonomy (RITA)​ (HBCU News)​.

  • Morgan State University's President, David K. Wilson, has been named to the boards of T. Rowe Price Charitable and TIAA​ (HBCU News)​.

  1. Financial Grants and Support:

    • Multiple HBCUs have received substantial financial support. North Carolina A&T State University received a $1.1 million grant to enhance its special education program. Tennessee State University was awarded $4.9 million to upgrade campus infrastructure and build a new biomedical research center. Other institutions like Winston-Salem State University, Florida Memorial University, and Fayetteville State University also received notable donations​ (HBCU Buzz)​.

  2. Infrastructure and Institutional Changes:

    • Fisk University in Nashville was granted permission to repurpose COVID-19 relief funds to stabilize its finances​ (HBCU News)​.

    • Tennessee State University has halted its current presidential search to start anew, indicating a quest for fresh leadership​ (HBCU News)​.

  3. Academic and Athletic Achievements:

    • Grambling State University excelled in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) report, with four programs achieving perfect scores​ (HBCU News)​.

    • First-ever HBCU All-Stars International Team to practice in Atlanta, before heading to Paris in July. The team consists of 10 elite players carefully selected from the HBCU All-Star games of 2022, 2023 and 2024 held in New Orleans, Houston and Phoenix. (Fox 5 Atlanta)

  4. Initiatives and Programs:

    • Apple is hosting an arts and entertainment accelerator program for 50 students from 19 HBCUs as part of the Propel Center initiative​ (HBCU News)​.

    • The California State University system announced the creation of the first CSU Statewide Central Office for the Advancement of Black Excellence, to be housed at Sacramento State​ (HBCU News)​.
